well, they did it, part 2

Sparing the local citizenry the dignity of a quiet end to the season, the Kansas City Chiefs have tripped over themselves into the AFC playoffs.

How this happened requires quite a bit of faith and knowledge of statistics and arcane rules of football, (no, make that the NFL), but by golly, they did it. As of noon today, four things had to happen for the Chiefs to be the best of the worst, the first being that they had to win over Jacksonville, (they did, hence the trip-over-themselves remark), and the Denver Bronco's had to lose, (they also did, in overtime, to the 49'ers, who hadn't seen snow since, well, a long time).

So, be sure to watch next week at the Chiefs visit Indianapolis. We will see what they are made of then...

Stunned disbelief is what I felt about the events as they unfolded for our beloved Chiefs. Almost as if Bush had said he'd see New Orleans rebuilt.....and actually had made it happen.

I'm making my predictions now (bolded teams win):

AFC Championship:
-Chargers
-Ravens (close game)

NFC Championship:
-Bears (blowout)
-Eagles

Super Bowl:
-Bears
-Ravens (close game)

The Bears won't make it past the NFC conference game. You can't win a championship without a championship caliber QB..

Yeah you can. Defense anyone? Sure they had a bad game last night, but all teams have their bad days. The defense'll make up for Grossman's incompetence and Smith's stubborness. And who knows, maybe the D's performance'll inspire Grossman to *gasp* make a few completions!

Defense can get you near the big game.. but it takes a QB to win it.

Think back on every one of th 40+ Super Bowl champions. Is there one where a pro-bowl caliber QB wasn't in place ?

I don't think so (since nearly all Super Bowl QB's are pro bowl caliber,) however I'm sure there's been times when the defense won the game, most recently Tampa Bay in Super Bowl 37. Yeah Brad Johnson threw 2 TD's, but the defense also returned 3 interceptions for touchdowns. Dexter Jackson rreturned 2 of those 3 and was named the MVP over Brad Johnson. The defense winning the game ain't common, but it can happen.

Agreed.. defense wins games. And obviously, their defense has gotten them pretty far. Problem the Bears face is that not only do they not have a championship QB, they don't even have a Brad Johnson. They don't have a STARTING QB by most team's standards.

That great defense (and I love defensive football) might very well do everything needed to win the Super Bowl... but their QB situation will do more, to lose it; if not keep them from getting that far.

I hope I'm wrong. I'll be pulling for'em.

Hey Anne, Football is for the ladies too. I've been to a few games and have seen all the ladies on the sidelines dressed in matching outfits and cheering. Those ladies sure seem to be enjoying the game. Besides my wife says she likes the tight pants the players wear.

Happy New Year to you.

My wife, who has much in common with Mother Theresa in her stoic and calm demeanor, is a raving nut on game days. When at home, she scares the dog with her screaming and hollering, one way or another. At the games, she is also quite, eh, vocal, (that word seems to fall short somehow...) in her admonitions. If not for her, I would most likely hear about this stuff the following day or in the paper or something...
