Yeah.. kinda, ummm, a pointless poll. But the poll (about being upset with government) made up little more than the first paragraph. It was a segue for what they WANTED to publish:
people are pissed at government
But nobody is paying attention to the Tea Party
And more and more people think Palin is a Dummy
At least the Post has given up trying to fool us with nuance (or they're just getting sloppy).
Yes, people are pissed at government, but they are specifically pissed at those who do the governing.
I disagree that nobody is paying attention to the Tea Parties, I do think that for the most part, they aren't doing enough to warrant any real attention. The issues that they are all perturbed about are a bit like the weather, nothing new.
I mean no disrespect for the people who follow these issues and/or parties, but being mad is not enough. The convention in Nashville resembled a Shriners convention or a UFO enthusiasts forum more than anything, a place where a few shrill voices mix with a lot of people selling t-shirts, bumper stickers and baseball caps. The tea party movement is not a movement at all, it is a revenue opportunity that makes a lot of noise and stirs up a lot of problems and thus far proposes no concrete solutions, (and I mean concrete, not conceptual). The saner voices in those camps have ideas, but are still overreaching, they need to scale back a bit to become entrenched and build from there. Define a problem and a solution, (in political parlance, a platform), and see what happens.
Sarah Palin is, most likely, not a dummy, seen in the right context. As a candidate for President, yes, she is, well.....
As somebody who can keep a straight face, (well, perhaps a blank stare), as she espouses an emotionally satisfying diatribe in front of a group of people who want to hear that diatribe, in exchange for large fees, she might be on to something. I think she seeks a career as the next Ann Coulter or Glenn Beck.
Lies and bullshit spewed from a nice smile and a set of respectable tata's for their age and mileage is still bullshit, but it carries a ways.
We probably don't disagree much... Palin is a non-entity, to me... and the Tea Party is too young to judge their effectiveness.
I was just commeting on the transparency (as in fake-ness) of the article. The title was a canard to publish text, pretty much echo your sentiments. They couldn't LEAD with..., "Tea Party is flat, Palin isn't to be taken seriously"..
The Tea Party though, will have significance soon... by default. How many more debt ceilings can thay raise ? It's gonna lock-up soon, and the people prone to self-reliance will be much better seated than those still on their knees, asking the government to hold their hands. The latter will be storming the gates when the entitlements stop coming.. the rest of us will be digging in and taking care of each other.
I did not see anything really 'fake' i the lead-in there, yes, they needed something, and there is some decorum to be maintained.
As for the tea parties, they need to develop some leadership and some moderation. Right now, what they have is attitude and the same "all or nothing" mentality that adds up to gridlock. I am willing to bet a few bucks that there would be some serious clashes between these factions when it comes to priorities and temperment as a national political alternative, even before they reach that point, if they reach that point. They need to back off, express their concerns in a clear concise manner, and set forth no more than two or three common, MODERATE, (spell that achievable and easily understandable) goals, and push for them. Reaching them will give the movement some clout.
Listening to a bunch of loudmouthed pundits, without breasts (O'Reilly, Beck) or with (Palin, Limbaugh), who do nothing but muddy the issues and shoot vitriol like so much rocksalt without really having anything constructive to say will lead to nothing at all.
Politically, this is hard to swallow, but less really is more right now.
Under normal circumstances.. moderation would be the key. However, the times, thay aint normal, and the movement is a populist reaction to actions by the party in power that are ANYthing but moderate. The first 90 days of this administration had us staring at an over-opportunistic, progressive freight-train. They tried to have trillion-dollar slush-funds, Cap-n-tax, and socialized medicine on the Prez' desk before the summer following his ...umm ordaining.
Seems the liberal factions (including the media), have decided that THEY can define and advise the movement. Starting by debasing (personally) the simplest of grass-root objections.. and throwing labels like; radical, racist, and ignorant at it, every step of the way.
As for the pundits. I'll agree that Beck is a bit of a salt-loaded shotgun. But O'reilly is pretty fair in his commentary. Palin WOULD be a 'nothing', had the arrogant media not given her so much attention. There's not much critisism to be thrown at Limbaugh. Like him or not.. he's long-since become a heavy-hitting institution.. his 23 years at this game are potent credentials. That type of success, in this type of arena, are no fluke. He's had more influence over politics, and political discussion than any, single president. His success (and Fox News' success) can't happen without popular support.
Both O'Reilly and Limbaugh come at you from a pre-defined point, they can afford to seem reasonable, (excuse me while I choke a minute here), as they set the stage for their arguments. If one buys into their facts and assumptions, then the conclusions that they present are nothing but God's own wisdom, but they are not, they are also biased and have little forebearance for anyone who does not accept the view that they present. I mentioned it before, but the attitude that they present is a lot like a TV preacher. They do end to rewrite history, they pick and choose facts and tend to take many things out of context, or outright bury them when it is convenient. Rush draws his style from top 40 radio, he gets his point, (or ad) across and then switches to something known to keep the listener distracted, hopefully allowing the battery acid he just spilled to soak in for a minute. I don't disrespect his style, I just tend to classify it as something other than most.
I classify Fox and some other outlets as a non-purient form of pornography, it is comfortable and familiar, sometimes stretches the imagination, (albeit in unhealthy ways) but in the end, accomplishes nothing. Are they to blame for the mess that we are in? No. But they are exploiting the fact that there is a mess, and there is lots of money to be made while people are trying to be informed, and they are a huge source of intellectual inertia when it comes to any sort of social debate.
As for Palin, it wasn't the press that promoted her to the spotlight. She is not the first backwoods hick to get caught in the spotlight and have to cope. Take a look at Mike Huckabee and Bill Clinton, Lyndon Johnson & Newt Gingrich. Then look at Pee Wee Herman. The comparison is apt.

You're a reasonable man.. and though we're a bit at odds, politically.. you rarely let ideology frame your points. You're slipping a lttle here, though.
I know from arguing with my brother, that even reasonable people have their fixed perspective (myself included). Put simply; you and I (being completely honest) will point to center of an argument perspective, and be pointing at two different places. What you would see as slightly left; I'd see as further left.. and vice-versa.
You see a Limbaugh as, "top-40-styled, sneak the acid in".. and while I see your point (to a point), he makes no pretension to be anything OTHER than that. And people like me KNOW that.. it's not news. We don't look to him for preacher-like guidance.. Heck.. I discovered Limbaugh, because my father told me "You oughta listen to this Rush guy.. he sounds just like you".
Anyway.. he's a commentator.. not an news anchor. Which brings me to my counterpoint. Old-school media has long since adopted a role employing the same tactics you mention. Context means little to them.. acid-spewing is the norm.. and running cover for liberal politicians is their message. You will NEVER see a, "Woodward/Berstein" angle aimed at anyone other than conservatives from them. They give literal passes to democrats.. and since Obama, you can almost see a twinkle in their eyes, when they speak of him. They're pretty much an arm of the DNC PR department.
My point is... they DO present themselves as objective.. and the public has finally caught on,, hence Fox News' popularity.

I am a middle aged, retired curmudgeonly type, who keeps to himself and sometimes reminds others of a serial killer.
I am gratified that you are taking the time to read this, but still I wonder; what brings you here? was it the 'next blog' button? anyway, welcome. Feel free to comment, I will feel free to bleep 'em out if I think it necessary.
My posting style is a subtle blend of chaos theory and jazz/bop riffing, fed by the stacatto notions that seem to appear on one neural synapse or another.
I apologize in advance for any spelling, grammatical or syntax errors that you might find--my style requires that I ennunciate these thoughts quickly, before my attention span shifts....

They give literal passes to democrats.. and since Obama, you can almost see a twinkle in their eyes, when they speak of him. They're pretty much an arm of the DNC PR department.
My point is... they DO present themselves as objective.. and the public has finally caught on,, hence Fox News' popularity.
